More Projects than Good Sense

For my entire life I have suffered from being interested in everything. I enjoy reading, listening, watching and discussing at length just about any topic. I will spend days learning about how things are made, then embark on making them myself.

Things that have fallen under the scope are:

  • Rope
  • Knots
  • Netting
  • Electronics
  • Radios
  • Leatherworking
  • Fountain Pens
  • Cooking
  • Sewing
  • Knitting
  • Drawing
  • Ukulele
  • Guitar
  • Harmonica
  • Computers (HTML, Javascript, CSS, Python, C, Networking)
  • Writing
As a rule I rotate through all of these and numerous others, the issue is that I constantly feel overwhelmed and incapable, despite possessing a better than average knowledge of most of them. When I get to feeling overwhelmed, I will shift to a different subject; or worse, shutdown entirely.
A secondary but closely related issue that I feel regularly is a lack of self worth. Because of this, I tend to give up easily on personal projects. If someone else is working on something and asks  for help, I will generally come up with a solution. When it is on my list and I am working solo, it means less and is much more likely to gather cobwebs.
After a recent conversation with a longtime friend and co-worker, I came to realize that this is hurting not just myself, but others by proxy. Because I am not keeping up with my development, the tools that I could make available remain stuck in my head. Those that need a different perspective to make a vital change, may never see the view from the summit.
If you deal with these same issues, come along. If you need a chuckle, there might be a few of those. If you need something to do, keep an eye here. My plan heading forward is to keep notes of the projects in the chute and what the daily progress is on each of those. I am going to start with:
  • Dusting off some bash and vim scripting.
  • Refresh my HTML/CSS knowledge
  • Learning Python and Javascript fluently
  • Write out an introductory cooking book.
